How many of you out there have ever heard of the Midianites? They were a tribe of people who made a yearly event out of invading Israel, killing their people, and stealing their crops every time their crops came in. It was during one of these events that God chose a man by the name of Gideon to be the one to deliver Israel. However, when you take a look at Gideon he doesn’t really appear to be qualified to do what he’s going to do, but God picked him even though there was really no foreseen reason why. One day Gideon was hiding in the threshing room and God sent an angel to him. When the angel appeared to him, the angel calls him a “mighty man of valor.” However, I want to point out, when the angel came and spoke these words to him, Gideon was hiding, and the reason was because he was afraid of the enemy.
I want to give you Gideon’s response to the angel found in Judges 6:13, “Gideon said to Him, O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles, which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” I want you to notice; he asks, “where are all the miracles that you have told us about?” I couldn’t tell you the times that I used to think about that verse. I’ve found out that most people that are not engaged in doing what God says to do are asking that exact same question. Folks, Gideon didn’t see a sign until he began to move and once he started moving God was moving with him.
Next we see God beginning to deal with Gideon’s fears in Judges 6:14, then, in Judges 6:34, it tells us, “The Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him.” In the Hebrew that phrase, ‘The Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon’, means the Spirit of the Lord clothed Himself with Gideon. In other words, the Holy Ghost clothed Himself with Gideon. I believe that is an exact picture of the outpouring and the infilling of the Holy Ghost in the New Testament. God has clothed Himself with us and now God wants us to take Him out into the enemies camp and let Him loose. However, I believe, for the most part, the church today is still hiding from the enemy like Gideon originally was. I’ve heard it said that fear is one of the most powerful motivating forces in the world. Which do you think is the most foolish, a child who is afraid to walk in the dark or a Christian who is afraid to walk in the light? Many Christians today are afraid to step out in the light and become the warriors that God has called them to be. They are as Gideon was, fearful and hiding, when the angel appeared to him and calling him a mighty man of valor.
As children of God, we are not called to live in fear and avoid the enemy; we are called to go into Satan’s territory, walk in the light, and be the mighty men/women that God has called us to be and when we begin to move, God moves with us. The church has got to wake up to the fact that God, who has clothed Himself with us, is greater and has already conquered all of the powers of darkness in this world and all we need to do is just get out there and let Him go!
