In Matthew 26:26-28 we see the last night before the crucifixion, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body’. Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new ‘covenant’, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” If today’s Americans had been sitting at the table when this took place…, they would have said, “what are you talking about?” The reason being, we have no concept of what covenant is all about, but the Jews understood covenant.
The word ‘covenant’ actually means ‘to cut’. A covenant was sworn in blood (they cut themselves and mingled their blood), it meant giving your total being of who you are, all you posses to someone else and because it was sworn in blood it meant it couldn’t be reversed or done away with. Covenants were sworn between individuals, clans, entire nations, and even families. When individuals cut a covenant, it was just between those two individuals; however, if it was cut between families, nations, or clans then they would choose what is known as a representative. Once a representative was selected everything the representative did would represent the entire group. That’s what Jesus is bringing out in Matthew 26, the covenant is about to be cut in the blood of God’s Son and he is the representative for the entire human race.
Jesus is now the representative for every ‘born-again’ believer and His armor became our armor. We are now in Him! That’s why you see things in Ephesians such as, ‘you are in Him, you are in the beloved, you were raised with Him, you were seated with Him, and if any man be in Him he is a new creation and old things have passed away’. Folks, all the church needs to do is just rise up, realize who they are, and what they have, because the battle has already been won. Jesus, who is our representative, won the battle, and when He won it, we won it!
