Isaiah 55:10-11 says, “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth, it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” He said there that the rain creates the seed when it comes down; without the rain there would be no seed. Then he says the seed produces the bread. However, there is a process that has to take place after the seed comes up, and that is called sowing. The seed has to be sown; the seed will do absolutely nothing if it is not sown. Verse 11 says, so shall His word be that goes forth from His mouth, in other words, His word will be like the rain. The rain comes down and the rain produces the seed. The Word of God is going out right now and when it goes out it, it is like rain in the earth, it will produce seed. Jesus told us that the words He spoke are “spirit and life,” and the reason why is because they produce seed.
As the word of God goes forth, it has the capacity to produce a harvest of different proportions; but the word of God is the seed. Unfortunately, many churches today are preaching sermons based upon social issues in the name of the gospel. I believe we are called to reflect the word of God, and the word of God has the power to fix the problems that we are going through. There is no word from God void of power and we are told, in the Bible, that “as long as the earth remains, there will be seed time and harvest.” We have to get an understanding that the word of God is like the rain coming down and it creates seeds. The seed is not your need, but your need is inside the seed. The word of God says the kingdom of God is like a man scattering seeds; when the rain of the word of God goes out, it has the capacity to create seeds in the earth. We are the soil into which the word of God is sown, and the purpose of God’s word is to produce rain and to create seed. When that seed is sown into good ground it will produce and bring forth a harvest.
I believe we all have the ability to be good ground if we so choose. When the seed is sown it takes some cultivating to come forth; weeds will grow automatically because we are living in a fallen world, and the earth has not yet been redeemed from the curse. The earth is still swaying under the curse that Adam brought, and it still produces thorns, briars, and weeds. The word of God is a seed that is sown into the garden of humanity, and just like Adam had to tend the garden; so do we. If we are not careful, we can allow all kinds of weeds and junk to grow in our garden. Everything that comes into us is a seed. That’s why Jesus said, “take heed what you hear, because with the same measure that you hear, it will be measured back into your life again.” There are good seeds and there are bad seeds, but they are seeds. What kind of seeds are you allowing to be planted? It’s up to us to make the choice of what type of seeds we allow to be planted in our garden.
