Proclaiming Liberty

Did you know the bible says the gospel is the power of God? Jesus spoke in parables. Most people think that He spoke in parables to help you understand and give you an example. But the truth is that Jesus said, the reason He spoke in parables so you couldn’t understand it. He said, it was hidden and the reason it is hidden is because, the gospel is the power of God.  He doesn’t want the ungodly and the hard hearted to have the power of God. But He does want His people to have it, so it is revealed to His people. It’s hidden from the world and from the ungodly. But those who are humble and walk before God, God reveals His word because it is the power of God.

Leviticus 25:8-10 says, ” And you shall count seven Sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven Sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years. Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family.”

Jubilee is all about proclaiming liberty through out the land. This is the saying that is on the liberty bell in Philadelphia. Now there is a civil liberty that was proclaimed and there was also a spiritual liberty that was proclaimed also. He talks about two of them the seven year and the fiftieth year. Now, a slave could only be a slave for seven years. You may think that by our standards today it was horrible to be a slave. In bible times it wasn’t, it was very common. During those times you couldn’t just go to a banker and borrow money to buy something. The way you acquired money back then, you would sell yourself as a slave for a period seven years. Example: if Joe needed money he would become Gary’s slave for seven years. During those seven years Gary would take care of him and give him money, after seven years Gary would have to let him go, that was the law. That’s what Jubilee established.

Also, Jews couldn’t sell their land. They could lease their land, but they couldn’t sell it. They could only lease it for up to fifty years. If the year of Jubilee was going to be coming up in ten years, then they could only lease their land for ten years.  The other people held a lease on it, and at the end of ten years, when the trumpet of Jubilee sounded the land reverted back and all slaves were free.  Nothing could be held in bondage on the fiftieth year of Jubilee, everything had to be loosed.

Isaiah spoke about this and Isaiah said, that when the Messiah comes He is going to proclaim the year of Jubilee. The year of Jubilee is also referred to as the acceptable Year of the Lord and as The Year of Favor.  We all know that favor is the same thing as grace, it’s unearned, it’s unmerited, and it’s undeserved. It’s God just blessing man. So he is saying here, that there is coming a time when this is going to transpire.
