The Israeli’s were slaves for over 400 years in Egypt. Egypt is a type of the world. Before you knew Christ, you were in slavery to the world and it’s system. We have been liberated from that. There are still many people in slavery and bondage to the world’s system. Many are terrified of what’s going on in the world and what lies ahead. But I believe the word of God gives us the answer for whatever we are going through.
Over in Exodus 6:2-7 says, And God spoke to Moses and said to him: ” I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them. If you notice the word LORD there, that’s the name Jehovah that’s the name for covenant God. He appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty, not as Jehovah.
Now the word God Almighty is the word El Shaddai. El Shaddai means in Hebrew the breasty one, it is symbolic of all the blessings or all provisions. So He appeared to Abraham as the God of all Provisions. However, He cut the covenant with Abraham but it says here, Abraham didn’t know God as Jehovah (covenant God), Abraham knew Him as El Shaddai (God of all Provisions).
Hundreds of years later, He reveals to Moses that He is Jehovah. Let me explain the difference, the covenant that God cut with Abraham provides the source for all God’s blessings. God swore in a covenant by blood that I will bless you. He swore in a covenant saying, in this covenant by this blood I swear I’m going to bless you and all your descendants from here on out. In other words, Jehovah swears in blood that He is going to be El Shaddai to all of Abraham’s descendants including Moses and including these Israelites who are now slaves.
He goes on to say, I have established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage in which they were strangers and I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel who the Egyptians keep in bondage and I have remembered my covenant. Therefore say to the children of Israel I am the LORD I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians I will rescue you from their bondage and I will redeem you with an out stretched arm and with great judgment I will take you as my people and I will be your God and you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
There is going to be judgment that is going to fall upon Egypt. There are 10 plagues that are going to come upon Egypt when He brings them out, because Pharaoh refused to let them go. So God brings 10 plagues upon them and each of those plagues are associated with some type of deity that Egypt worshiped. For instance they worshiped the Nile River and God turned the Nile River to blood. They worshiped frogs so God said, okay you want to worship frogs, here I will give you some frogs and the entire land of Egypt was covered with frogs.
Egypt had 2 primary gods and all these other gods were under those gods. The 2 primary god’s they had were Baal and Osiris. Now, Osiris they believed was the god of the earth. Baal they believed was the god of the heavens. Baal was also known as the sun god. And all the other gods of the heavens were underneath Baal. And all of the other gods of the earth, were under Osiris. Those were their 2 main gods.
