Many Christians are trying so hard to get rid of the darkness out of their life, but end up finding themselves coming up short. The answer for this problem is found over in Galatians 5:16, “I say then: walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Christians have dyslexia when it comes to this verse, they think that if they can just get their flesh under control then, they’ll walk in the Spirit. That’s not what that verse is saying, what it’s saying is, if we will walk in the Spirit then; we will not get all wrapped up in doing the things of the flesh. Let me show you what I’m talking about, have you ever walked into a dark room before? How did you get rid of the darkness in that room? You turned on the light! The same thing applies with the things of God, if we’ll get our focus off of the darkness and start focusing on the light, then the darkness will flee.
Galatians 5:17 goes on to say, “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another; so that you do not do the things that you wish.” The word ‘lusts’ there actually means desires. So, what he’s saying there is that both the Spirit and the flesh have desires, but they are contrary to each other. Desires are fleeting thoughts that come to us and these thoughts can come through many different avenues, but mainly by what we see or hear. No matter what we do in life, everything starts with lusting or desire. No one has ever robbed a bank without first having a desire. Let me give you an illustration of what I’m talking about: A man named Joe is having severe financial problems and is about to lose everything he owns. One day Joe is driving down the road and sees a bank and all of a sudden he gets (a fleeting thought) a desire to rob a bank. Next, Joe begins meditating/thinking on that desire and starts thinking something like this: just one good heist at the bank, would solve my financial problems and all my worries would be over. The only step left for Joe to do is put some action to it; so a few days later, Joe goes out and robs a bank. The same way in which this worked for Joe in the flesh, is the exact same way the Spirit of God and the things of the Spirit work, all we have to do is go to the word of God, then we can get a desire for the things of God, next we meditate/think about it, and the next step would be to put it into action.
As children of God, we are called to release God’s presence into the lives of people everywhere we go. The church for the most part has failed, it’s been acting like a doctor who has the cure for cancer, but won’t share the cure with anyone. The church needs to wake up to the fact of who they really are and get busy lusting after the things of God, meditating upon them, and put some action to them. Once the church get’s busy doing that, I believe we’ll turn this world upside down for the Kingdom of God.
