There is just something about our human nature that wants to dispute and defend our opinions, but in Philippians 2:14, it tells us, “Do all things without complaining or disputing (arguing).” How many of you out there know that at times not complaining and arguing is not an easy thing to do? In today’s world there are so many things out there that we can find to complain or argue about. This also applies to our own homes, with our own spouses, and our own kids. But yet he tells us there in Philippians to do all things without complaining or arguing. A lot of Christians would just pray, “God help me to do this.” Wrong! He didn’t say pray for Him to help us do it, he just said do it. So if God tells us to do it then apparently we have the ability to do it. So he’s telling us there to do everything without complaining or arguing.
Philippians 2:15-16 goes on to say, “that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.“ The reason he’s telling us not to complain and argue is so that we can ‘shine as lights in the world’, holding forth the ‘word of life’. Jesus was the light of the world, but now that He’s gone, we have been given that responsibility. The world around us is in absolute 100% darkness; they don’t have even an ounce of light in them. The reason they’re in darkness is because there is no life there; they are spiritually dead. The world has to be re-born because apart from God there is no life. God is life and God is light, there is no light apart from life.
The world around us has problems and they’re looking for answers. They don’t know they’re alienated from the life of God, they don’t even know that there is a God; much less one that loves them, who wants to take care of them, and who has the answer for all of their problems. The only answer is the living Word as it comes forth as a light out of the midst of a born-again, child of God. Unfortunately, the Christian world, as a whole, has had a tendency to get born again, walk with the Lord, but then before long they start getting knowledge oriented. The only reason we need to be learning anything is so that we can take on the image and likeness of our Father. Also that we can learn what He does, how He behaves, and so that word can become a living word on the inside of us. In other words, it’s not just something that we’ve heard the Pastor say, and think to ourselves, ‘well, that was good’! Instead, it’s that we are connected with the life, it’s something we know personally, His word is alive on the inside of us, and it is shining through us. Folks, the world around us is dying and in total darkness and the only hope that they have of ever seeing anything is that light shining through us. That light should be shining through us to such a degree that the world around starts to think, ‘Why is this man/woman so happy when everyone else is so down and gloomy? What is it? What is going on in their life? They must have the answers‘. That’s why, as children of God, we are called to shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life. Folks, that is Christianity 101, that’s what true Christianity is really all about!
