It may be hard for you understand right now but walking in Eternal Life will help you solve your financial problems, marriage problems, emotional problems and any other problem you might be facing. Before I became a Christian I was always confused by the things that I had heard preachers say. One of the most confusing things was; “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” That sounded good, but I saw Christians die, just like everybody else; therefore, it made absolutely no sense to me at all. Then, when I became a Christian, I began to understand it meant that, after I died, I would go live with God eternally, and thus, I would have eternal life. But that created another problem, because I was told that sinners would spend eternity in hell with Satan, and Christians would spend eternity in heaven with God. So that meant that sinners, and saints, would all live eternally and therefore, all would have eternal life. But that is not what the Bible teaches. The Bible teaches that eternal life is something promised to those who accept Jesus Christ as the Lord of their life.
Then I came across a scripture in the Bible that made me study even more: Jesus said, “This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God.” Jesus defines eternal life as, “knowing” God. To understand what is meant by the word “know“, let’s go back to the beginning when God said, “Adam knew Eve and she had a son.” To know means to be intimate, so Jesus was saying, eternal life is to be intimate with God the Father. The average Christian today knows God only in conjunction with the forgiveness of their sins; they do not have an intimate fellowship with Him. Once we become a believer we receive by grace eternal life; and through prayer and knowledge we create intimacy with our Father God. God desires to speak to you, and to lead you in the affairs of everyday life. When we learn how to walk in that intimate relationship with our heavenly Father, He will supply us with the solution to every marriage problem, finical problem and every other problem we face in life. But you must make a decision to become intimate with Him. “Draw nigh unto God and He will draw nigh unto you.”
The Jerusalem Bible gives a better understanding of eternal life, because it says, “the Life of the Eternal One“. Once we accept Christ, and are born again, we receive a new nature, and it is the nature of God, our Father; it is the life of the Eternal One who now resides within us, therefore, we can develop an intimacy with Him. Just as we received the nature of our earthly parents, when we are born of God, we receive His nature, or the life of the Eternal One. In 2 Peter 1:3-4, Peter called it the “Divine nature” and he said, “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature.” What an amazing statement! How can you possibly measure that statement? The Divine Nature or the Nature of Divinity; Christians are partakers of that Divine Nature, the Eternal Life, the life and nature of the Eternal God has actually taken up resistance inside of every born again believer. But notice it said, “through the knowledge of Him“. I fear that most believers today only have enough knowledge to believe that their sins are forgiven. The truth is, your sins are not just forgiven, they are totally paid for, and wiped out! Jesus, who knew no sin, was made to be sin, that you might be made the righteousness of God in Him. When you accepted Christ, God wiped away your sins, past, present and future. He then made you righteous and placed within you Eternal Life, which is His Divine Nature. Peter went on to say, “He has given us everything that pertains to life and godliness“. In other words, everything we will ever need for this life, or for godliness, is resident within the Divine Nature, and the Divine Nature is resident within us. As you learn to walk in that Divine Nature you will create the marriage, the finances and the over all life that you desire.
In 2 Peter 1:3-4, I want to bring your attention to the word “knowledge,” in the book of Hosea, which says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” According to this verse, knowledge is the key to living in the Divine nature, and accessing everything that pertains to life and godliness,” that includes a good marriage, financial security and a sound mind. Are you growing in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ? Can you back up and look at your life, and see that you have progressed, spiritually, in your walk with God over the past year? If there has been no real change for the better, then you’re not growing in knowledge. God always moves us forward, He will never leave us in the same place we were six months ago.
The Bible says that the Israelites “knew God’s acts, but Moses knew God’s ways.” Intimacy with the life of the Eternal One will cause you to know God’s ways. Remember when James and John wanted to call fire down from heaven and Jesus said, “You don’t know what spirit you are of?” Apparently they were not of the same spirit that Jesus was. They knew what Elijah, in the Old Testament did, therefore, it must be good for today. Some people say God is pouring His anger and wrath out on America, I say to them in the words of Jesus, “You don’t know what spirit you are of.” God has sworn, under the New Covenant that He would never be angry with us again!” I challenge you to build an intimate relationship with the life of the Eternal One and learn of His ways, not just His acts.
