“By grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourself, not of works lest any man should boast” (Eph 2:8-9). Grace means undeserved, unmerited and unearned favor. I just finished counseling a young Christian lady who got saved when she was younger, but now family members have made her feel condemned, unworthy and unsaved. Religious people were basically telling her, now that she has accepted God’s unearned favor, it was up to her to maintain it, or in other words, to earn it from here on out. How sad. Our performance didn’t get us saved and it can’t keep us saved. God said, “If it’s by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” (Rom 11:6). In other words, if God’s favor in our life has anything at all to do with our works then it ceases to be grace. God has, and is, pouring out His grace and favor on us today, simply because God is Love, not because we deserve it. Stop depending on your performance and start trusting in God’s performance through His son Jesus Christ. Rom 1:17 says, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” And never forget, what God has joined together (you and Christ) let not man put asunder.
